Man Utd sweating over fitness of four defenders for Chelsea trip

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has confessed he is likely to be without as many as six defenders for the trip to Chelsea on Wednesday.

The Red Devils are playing for little more than pride domestically, with their sights set firmly on the upcoming Europa League final, and Amorim has confessed he will choose his Premier League lineups with one eye on the final in Bilbao.

Centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Jonny Evans are both long-term absentees, while young Ayden Heaven has been missing since March. More recently, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Diogo Dalot have all gone down with injuries.

Not only will the majority of the latter quartet miss the Chelsea game, but Amorim confessed they are battling to return for the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur next week.

“I don’t know if they’re going to be available [for the final],” Amorim said. “We’re going to try and push. All the players want to play really bad. I don’t think they’ll go to Chelsea, but there’s a possibility for some in the final.”

Amorim confirmed he will pick United’s team to face Chelsea based largely around protecting his most-important players for next week’s final.

“I know the starting XI I am thinking for Chelsea, then I will see,” he said. “Even the way we play there, against Chelsea, I will see it and it’s going to be important for the next one.

“We need to perform and they need to perform. That is the important thing. Then we are going to, the same way, if there is a player that can get an injury [and is] not recovered for this game so [it] will put him in risk for the final, he will not play.

“But if it’s not that situation, we will have a lot of time to recover. And we cannot spend eight days, nine days without a game. That is a bad thing for the final so I think they will be prepared for the game.”

Hamas proposes releasing some hostages in fresh talks after new Israel offensive

Hamas has proposed releasing more hostages under a new Gaza ceasefire deal, after new negotiations were held on Saturday. The talks began hours after Israel’s military launched a major new offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas has agreed to release nine hostages in exchange for a 60-day truce and Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners, a Palestinian official told the BBC.

The official said the new proposed deal would also allow the entry of 400 aid trucks a day, and the evacuation of medical patients from Gaza. Israel, in turn, has demanded proof of life and detailed information about all remaining hostages.

The new round of ceasefire talks is being held through Qatari and US mediators in Doha, and began on Saturday afternoon local time.

Israel is yet to respond publicly to the proposed deal, but said prior to the talks that it would not withdraw troops from Gaza or commit to an end to the war.

The proposal would not include these elements, the BBC understands.

Israel’s military announced the launch of a new offensive named “Operation Gideon’s Chariots” earlier on Saturday, amid the deadliest wave of strikes in Gaza in months.

At least 300 people have been killed since Thursday, rescuers say, including at hospitals and refugee camps in the north and south of the Strip.

Thousands have died since Israel resumed strikes on 18 March, following the collapse of a fragile ceasefire which lasted two months.

Aid agencies say Gaza’s grievous humanitarian situation has also worsened, as Israel has been blocking supplies of food and other aid from entering the territory for 10 weeks.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this month promised a major military escalation in the war to occupy and control swathes of Gaza, force the Palestinian population to the south of the territory, and “destroy” Hamas.

Speaking from inside Gaza, journalist Ghada Al Qurd told the BBC’s Newshour programme there had been lots of “airstrikes, shellings, drones, shooting and even exploding, in the north and east.”

“It’s terrifying and horrible,” she said.

She said her family had only been having one meal a day, due to the scarcity and spiralling cost, and accused Israel of “using food as a weapon” – an allegation UN officials have also made in recent weeks.

Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among Gaza’s 2.1 million population, as footage and accounts emerge of emaciated children suffering malnutrition under the Israeli blockade.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that “a lot of people were starving” in Gaza. The Israeli government has repeatedly rejected claims there is a food shortage in Gaza.

Victoria Rose, a British reconstructive surgeon working at Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that her team were “exhausted” and staff had lost a “considerable amount of weight”.

“The children are really thin,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of youngsters whose teeth have fallen out.

“A lot of them have quite significant burn injuries and with this level of malnutrition they’re so much more prone to infection and they’ve got so much less capacity to heal.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said on 5 May that Israel was preparing an “intense entry into Gaza” to capture and hold territory, but that it would not commence until Trump completed his tour of the Middle East. He left the region on Friday.

That day, residents across northern and central Gaza were told to leave their homes or places of shelter – an order aid workers say is almost impossible because many have already been repeatedly made homeless during the war.

The IDF said on Saturday it wouldn’t stop operating “until Hamas is no longer a threat and all our hostages are home” and that it had “struck over 150 terror targets throughout the Gaza Strip” in the preceding 24 hours.

Strikes on Saturday hit towns in the north of Gaza, including Beit Lahiya and the Jabalia refugee camp, as well as in the southern city of Khan Younis, the Hamas-run health ministry and civil defence forces said.

Thousands of Israeli troops, including soldiers and reservists, could enter Gaza as the operation ramps up in the coming days. Israeli tanks have also been seen at the border, Reuters news agency reported.

The intensified offensive has been condemned by the UN and some European leaders.

Commissioner-General of the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency (Unrwa) Philippe Lazzarini expressed shock at Israel’s military operation, saying: “How many more Palestinian lives will be wiped off from their homeland by bombardments, hunger or lack of medical care?”

“Atrocities are becoming a new norm, under our watch, making the unbearable bearable with indifference,” he said.

Following the new strikes, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani all called for a permanent ceasefire, while Germany’s Foreign Ministry said the new offensive risked “worsening the catastrophic humanitarian situation for Gaza’s population and the remaining hostages”.

Israel launched a military campaign to destroy Hamas in response to the group’s cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. Hamas still holds 58 hostages.

At least 53,000 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry, including more than 3,000 people since March.

More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed during Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry has announced.

That number – 50,021 – equates to about 2.1% of the 2.3 million pre-war population of Gaza, or around 1 in 46 people.

A total of 113,274 others had been injured in the same period, the health ministry said.

Figures from the Gaza Ministry of Health (MoH) have been widely used throughout the war and are seen as reliable by the United Nations and international institutions. But Israel has consistently refuted data published by Gaza’s authorities.

International journalists, including the BBC, are blocked by Israel from entering Gaza independently, so are unable to verify figures from either side.

The figures released by the MoH for the number of people killed do not differentiate between civilians and fighters.

Xavi Simons confirms transfer decision amid four-way Premier League race

Xavi Simons is reported to have reached a decision on what the summer transfer window will hold for him, amid interest from the Premier League’s biggest clubs, as well as Bayern Munich.

Simons has enjoyed a strong season as he continues to make good on his potential as a former child prodigy, joining RB Leipzig on a permanent transfer worth an initial €50m in January.

But with Leipzig failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League and the opportunity to take the next step in his career by once more joining a bigger club, a transfer is on the cards.

Fabrizio Romano writes that Simons has decided to leave Leipzig this summer, with the Bundesliga made aware of those plans. It could be that the 22-year-old Netherlands international says in Germany by joining Bayern Munich, or moves to the fifth country of his young career.

Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have all been linked with Simons, who made his name as a highly-rated prospect in Barcelona’s La Masia, before being poached by Paris Saint-Germain and later having a senior breakout with PSV Eindhoven.

Welcome to Rockville festival set to heat up Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – This weekend, Daytona Beach will transform into a rock lover’s paradise as hundreds of thousands of fans gather for the fifth annual Welcome to Rockville festival.

The World Center of Racing will become the World Center of Rock, with fans lining up starting Thursday night to secure their spots for a weekend filled with live music. Last year, over 200,000 attendees flocked to Daytona Beach for the festival, and this year, organizers expect even more.

“Record-setting numbers — 55,000 a day. This festival just continues to grow and bring in fans from all over the world,” said Chamie McCurry, general manager for Danny Wimmer Presents.

With a lineup featuring headliners like Green Day, Linkin Park, and Korn, excitement is building for the performances ahead.

As temperatures rise, the production crew at Danny Wimmer Presents is taking measures to ensure the comfort and safety of festival-goers.

“The grandstands will have a cool zone, and we have buses at the stages where people can find respite from the heat. The fact that we have an onsite urgent care and medical team is all something that we’re taking advantage of,” McCurry explained.

Security is also a top priority this year. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is ramping up resources inside the speedway to ensure a safe environment for attendees.

“Our SWAT team is out there, our narcotics team is out there, our detectives are out there, but the big wrinkle this year is we’re going to have Border Patrol with us,” said Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

Last year, 522 attendees reported stolen items, including cell phones and credit cards. Sheriff Chitwood revealed that a South American gang was behind the thefts, operating in organized rings at large events across the country. Eight individuals were arrested during the festival.

“This year, if they want to show their head — they’re going right into federal custody,” the sheriff warned.

Whether it’s addressing security concerns or preparing for the heat, the teams are ready to keep the music playing and the fans rocking out.

“It is North America’s biggest rock festival. It will be one of the largest festivals in the United States this year of any genre,” McCurry said.

Gérard Depardieu sexual assault trial verdict expected

French cinema star Gérard Depardieu faces a suspended prison term and registration as a sex-offender if he is convicted today of assault.

At his trial six weeks ago, the court heard testimony from two women who said the 76-year-old actor groped them during work on a film set in Paris in 2021. Depardieu denies the allegations.

In his summing-up before the judge on 27 March, prosecutor Laurent Guy said: “It’s perfectly possible to be an excellent actor and a great father – and still commit a crime.

“You are not here to pass judgment on French cinema. You are here to judge Gérard Depardieu, just as you would any other citizen.”

The prosecutor asked for a suspended prison term of 18 months, as well as a €20,000 (£16,850) fine and registration on the sex-offenders’ list.

Claude Vincent, representing one of the two women plaintiffs, described Depardieu as a “misogynist” and a “case-study in sexism”.

But for the defence, Jérémie Assous demanded an acquittal and called the plaintiffs’ team “more militants than lawyers”.

“They cannot bear that there should even be a defence. They think any defence is a supplementary assault,” he told the court.

The alleged assaults took place in September 2021 when Depardieu was making a film called Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters) about an ageing actor coming to terms with his declining powers.

It was the first time the actor appeared in court on sexual assault charges. Several other women have made similar allegations in the media, and an alleged rape case could come to trial.

The first plaintiff – a set decorator – told the court that after a minor argument with Depardieu, he caught her between his legs and held her by the hips.

The second woman – an assistant director – said the actor touched her buttocks and breasts through her clothes on three separate occasions.

Depardieu denied the allegations, saying only that he might have touched the women accidentally or to keep his balance.

At the end of the hearings, Depardieu said: “My name has been dragged through the mud by lies and insults.

“A trial can be a very special experience for an actor. Seeing all this anger, the police, the press. It’s like being in a science fiction film, except it’s not science fiction. It’s life.”

He thanked the prosecution and defence teams for giving him insights into how courts operate. “These lessons may be an inspiration for me one day if I get to play a lawyer,” he said.

Depardieu said he had not worked as an actor for three years since the sexual allegations against him began to circulate.

However earlier this month it was reported he had begun work in the Azores on a film directed by his friend, the actress Fanny Ardant. Depardieu is playing a magician on a mysterious island, according to media reports.

Ardant appeared with Depardieu in Les Volets Verts and spoke in his defence at the trial.

“Genius – in whatever form it takes – carries within it an element of the extravagant, the untamed, the dangerous. (Depardieu) is the monster and the saint,” she said.

Another veteran French actress took Depardieu’s side on Monday. In a rare interview with French television, Brigitte Bardot, 90, deplored how “talented people who touch the buttocks of a girl are consigned to the deepest dungeon.”

“Feminism isn’t my thing,” Bardot said. “Personally, I like men.”
